Reed and Holland deliver so many feels in this book and I absolutely devoured it in one sitting, because that’s just how fun, flirty and sexy Maren Moore’s stories are. And so far, I love what we’re getting and just how exciting this series is going to be.Ĭhange on the Fly is the first of the Totally Pucked series and it follows Reed Davidson as he goes from being the responsible playboy of the team to becoming a guardian to his nephew and falling for his little sister’s best friend. You’ll recognise the Avalanches as the team Liam used to coach, but now that he’s moved onto high school hockey, we’re getting a 5-book series about a group of hockey players to fall in love with. I should have known that Maren Moore would give us a book and a whole series about the hockey team he’s a part of. When we first met Reed in The Newspaper Nanny I was really intrigued by him. Only now, the stakes are higher and my heart is the one on the line. Reed was used to getting everything he ever wanted, and this time… He wanted me. Mary Wollstonecraft’s personal life was unconventional she travelled widely through revolutionary France and was recognised as a philosopher, writer and intellectual. Hewitt’s work is fascinating in that it looks at the emotional impact of social change at the time and the legacy it left behind. The period at the end of the Enlightenment, the time in which Mary was writing, is explored in A Revolution of Feeling: The Decade That Forged The Modern Mind by Rachel Hewitt. Intellectual society listened – spurred to thoughtfulness by the radical turmoil of the French Revolution – although real social change takes much longer to achieve, as is still all too evident today. Written in 1792 it upholds the importance of education for women and attacks the sexual double standards prevalent at the time, articulating concepts which still resonate over 200 years later. She authored one of the books that form the foundations of the women’s rights movement: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Mary Wollstonecraft was a radical and free thinker. However, today I’d like to go a little further back and look at mother and daughter Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley. The centenary commemoration of Women’s Suffrage has cast a spotlight of the lives of extraordinary women in the last 100 years. It is interesting to be outside witnesses to see their relationship in its many forms: from passion and desire, through to frustration and anger before settling down to long time devotion with a few sparks in between. The novel specifically focuses on her relationship with Robert Dudley, who Elizabeth had known since they were both children. But the book also shows shows how she as a woman used it to manipulate people’s minds in to doing exactly what she wanted. This is one of those occasions.Īlison Weir shows how Elizabeth I used the fact that she was one of the most sought-after brides while she reigned for political purposes and in fact keep everyone on their toes. The trouble is with some of them I’m in two minds when I read them. I love a great historical fiction book, particularly if it is set around the Tudor period. It is also possible that a third brother of Alfred was buried at Sherborne as well. He would have been about eleven years old at the time of the first death, and about sixteen at the time of the second. Sherborne’s most important feature is its abbey, and it is here that two elder brothers of King Alfred, Æthelbald (died 860) and Æthelberht (died 865) were buried, and I consider it likely that Alfred would have been present at their funerals, or would have at least visited their resting places. They are viewed through a glass panel fitted into the floor. Although they are located near the plaque there is no evidence that these are the bones of King Alfred’s brothers. Plaque inside Sherborne Abbey, Dorset, informing us that King Æthelberht and King Æthelbald were interred nearby The bones to be found near the plaque. There is no evidence that this was the case. This of course challenges what you might read elsewhere, in that Winchester was King Alfred’s “Capital”. I believe there is a plausible case to be made for this to have been the most important place in Wessex until shortly after King Alfred died (when Winchester appears to have become more important). One of Anglo-Saxon history’s most important characters, Asser, King Alfred’s companion and “biographer” became bishop here. It was the most important ecclesiastical location in an area covering Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. At least two Kings of Wessex were buried at Sherborne. This is a vital, complex, and long overdue reassessment of the life and work of one of the towering figures of second-wave feminism. Given exclusive access to never-before-published photographs and archives, including her letters to many of the major figures of second-wave feminism, award-winning biographer Martin Duberman traces Dworkin’s life, from her abusive first marriage through her central role in the sex and pornography wars of the following decades. This biography is the perfect complement to the widely reviewed anthology of her writing, Last Days at Hot Slit, published in 2019, providing much-needed context to her work. It is in recent years, especially with the rise of the #MeToo movement, that there has been a resurgence of interest in her ideas. Her many detractors were eager to reduce her to the caricature of the angry, man-hating feminist who believed that all sex was rape, and as a result, her work has long been misunderstood. Although frequently relegated to its more radical fringes, Dworkin was without doubt a formidable and influential writer, a philosopher, and an activist-a brilliant figure who inspired and infuriated in equal measure. Fifteen years after her death, Andrea Dworkin remains one of the most important and challenging figures in second-wave feminism. The Tuesday Poets are an international group who try to post a poem every Tuesday and take turns to edit the main website. He was a friend of Rupert Brooke and Edwin Muir and he's currently labelled a 'Georgian' poet and rather overlooked. Wilfred Gibson isn't much known now, but he was born in Hexham, near where I live in England, and, though he left as an adult and went to London, he spent most of his life writing about Northumberland (check out The Kielder Stone). My cousin Jean had to learn it by heart for school and I remember one summer holiday when she kept repeating it over and over - can't read the poem now without hearing her fourteen year old voice reciting it. So, when it came to choosing a Tuesday Poem, this one came instantly to mind. Can't sleep, don't feel like eating, don't have the energy to do anything, except in the middle of the night when it's cooler. Those big, white, blundering bulks of death,ĭrowning in the intense heat that is covering Italy at the moment, I keep thinking of ice and polar bears and cool places. Plunged headlong down with flourished heels She first turns to her bunkmate, a Hawaiian woman who can leg press Piper and her bed, who walks with Piper and protects Piper, but clearly doesn't value Piper just as Piper doesn't value her. She refuses the volunteer efforts of Maria and her Dominican "crew," starting what can only be described as a race war, in which she is in desperate need of protection. Season 4 began Friday, June 17 and as old questions were answered, new questions were just forming, one being, " Why was Piper branded on Orange Is The New Black ?" To answer this question you had to binge-watch from the comfort of your living room/bedroom/any room to, at the very least, Episode 7, titled, "It Sounded Nicer In My Head."Īs Season 4 evolves, we watch Piper the "prison panty pusher," attempt to establish dominance in order to maintain her rather lucrative dirty underwear operation. It turns out, the power struggles were just beginning. We all wanted to know if Nichols would be returning, and if Sophia would be stuck in SHU, and if Piper would be the next "leader" of Litchfield. (Warning: This post contains spoilers from Orange Is the New Black Season 4, Episode 8.) Season 3 of Orange Is The New Black left binge-watching fans with a seemingly endless list of unanswered questions.
